Neo-Assyrian Sources

Following the contraction of the Middle Assyrian state and a period of reduced circumstances, in the late tenth century the kings of Assyria embarked upon a resurgence which was to take Assyria to its maximum dimensions. The end was also rapid. Following the death of Ashurbanipal the empire began to quickly unravel. In 612 BC Nineveh fell to a coalition of the Medes and Babylonians. For a few years a reduced state staggered on centered around a capital at Harran, but by 605 BC at the latest the Assyria had finally come to an end. In both number and variety the Neo-Assyrian period gives us by far the richest data on the history of Erbil.
